PDP crisis in Katsina deepens

From Muawuya Bala Idris, Katsina

Crisis within Katsina State chapter of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has deepened with a faction in the party known as ‘PDP A Gyara’ that vowed to continue with court cases against its incumbent state leadership.

The position taken by the faction of the party followed alleged refusal of its leadership under Alhaji Salisu Yusuf Majigiri to abide with a reached reconciliation agreement.

Our correspondent reports that faction, created by some bigwigs of the party, has declared the elected party leadership in the state as illegal, insisting that due process was not followed for the election of officials of the party.

Addressing a press conference at Liyafa Hotel, the chairman of the Reconciliation Committee of the faction, Lawal Rufai Safana, recalled that a committee was set up by both aggrieved members and its leadership to resolve the crisis within the party.

He said the setting of the committee followed court order dissolving the party leadership, but agreed that the crisis within the party should be resolved for overall interest of all members.

Safana said after series of meetings, an agreement was reached but the other side of the party refused to sign the agreement.

“We members of ‘PDP A Gyara’ were left with no option than to continue with the onerous struggle to right the wrongs in the running of PDP and its style of eldership,” Safana said.

He accused the state leadership of the party for running it as their own personal property without mindful of the crisis within it.

“The party is definitely in extreme distress and the earlier this is addressed by the national leadership, the better. Time is of essence,” said Safana.

He said the faction was working not to achieve personal interest of any individuals or groups but to ensure unity and progress of the party.

He added that members of the faction would not allow few selfish individuals to hijack the party.

Safana called on all members of the party to work with the faction so as to bring sanity and ensure its success in 2023.

Effort to reach the state chairman of the party, Alhaji Majigiri has failed as he refused to pick phone calls.
