Drama in Plateau: Security agents whisk away impeached Speaker, 10 MPs

From Christiana Gokyo, Jos

The Plateau State House of Assembly drama has taken another dimension as the impeached Speaker Nuhu Abok Ayuba and 10 other members were whisked away by security agents.

The drama unfolded itself when the state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Edward Ebuka, led the 11 members to four awaiting Hilux vehicles to an unknown destination.

The members, who were unruffled, said that: “We are firm and resolute in our duties to the Plateau people that voted us to the House in our struggle to fight to a logical conclusion until the Speaker is reinstated.”

Hon. Zingtin Sochang, member representing Langtang South, said: “We are now being bundled into four Hilux vehicles by security men to a yet to be known location and if after 20 miniutes you call us and no response, you should know that we have been taken to an unknown place.”

In a reaction, the attention of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has just been drawn to what it called “the unconstitutional role of the state Commissioner of Police, under the directives of the Presidency through Governor Simon Bako Lalong to harass, NEWS intimidate and arrest 12 Hon. members of the Plateau State House of Assembly from carrying out their constitutional responsibilities as representatives of the people.”

A statement, signed by the Publicity Secretary of the party in the state, Mr. John T. Akans, said the party alerted the people of the nation, particularly those in the state on the incident, which it described as undemocratic and unconstitutional role of the Commissioner of Police who had since morning relocated his office to the Assembly.

The party stated that the CP and other security agencies used should explain their actions to the people of the state. PDP demanded that the police commissioner should note that he has no constitutional right to prevent members from discharging their responsibilities in line with the 1999 constitution of the nation as amended.

According to the party, it is monitoring as things unfold and will inform the people of the state on the happenings, commending the members of the House for their steadfastness in sustaining democracy and the rule of law.
