Candidates sign peace accord in Katsina

A total of 11 gubernatorial candidates in Katsina State have signed a peace according for successful conduct of this year’s general elections.

The event was organized by the state Police Command in collaboration with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and other security organizations in the state.

During the ceremony, two candidates of All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP), Engr. Nura Kaleel and Imrana Jino of Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) were absent and no representative signed on their behalf.

Speaking before the signing of the accord, the state Commissioner of Police, Alhaji Shehu Umar Nadada, charged the candidates to abide by the agreement contained in it.

Alhaji Nadada warned the candidate against use of thugs, hate speech and violence during and after the election.

He said security agents would not hesitate to deal with any one of them or their supporters violating the agreement signed.

Earlier, INEC Commissioner in the state, Prof. Yahaya Makafi, assured that the body would ensure credible and acceptable election.

Prof. Makafi explained that all necessary arrangement has been concluded for the conduct of the election.

Responding on behalf of either candidates, APC governorship candidate, Alhaji Dikko Umar Radda, commended security agents for their effort towards ensuring peaceful conduct of the election.

“We are ready to abide by all agreement contained in the Peace Accord.

“I call on all candidates to transmit the message to their supporters,” he said.

Our correspondent reports that the signing of the accord was witnessed by officials from Department of State Security (DSS), Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS), NDLEA, FRSC, Nigeria Correctional Service, 17 Brigade Nigerian Army, Customs Service and Civil Society Organizations (CSOs).
