Sunday, July 4, 2021 will continue to be remembered as a historic day not only for the Kano/Jigawa forum members of the Nigeria Guild of Editors (NGE), but for the members of the Guild at the national level, as it was the day set aside for the two historical events.

It was the day the recently elected President of the Guild, Mr. Mustapha Isah attended the wedding ceremony of the daughter of a respected, generous, senior colleague and veteran journalist and editor, who is a former Deputy President of the Guild, Malam Suleiman Uba Gaya at his residence.

Many members of the Guild were in attendance at the wedding as well as journalists and other dignitaries cutting across all walks of life. Later in the evening, the chairman of the Kano/Jigawa forum, Dr. Sule Yau Sule, hosted a warm and surprised reception in honour of the two newly elected members of the Guild.

They are Habibu Nuhu Kila and Umoru Ibrahim. It would be recalled that recently, the Guild held an election in Kano, where Habibu Kila was elected unopposed as Vice President North, while Umoru Ibrahim emerged as Member of the Standing Committee with highest votes of over 200.

Barely, a week after his election as Vice President North, Kila was appointed Special Adviser to the Jigawa State Governor on Media and Public Relations, an appointment he described as cumulative efforts by the Guild through its respected and amiable former president, Malam Halilu Baba Dantiye, mni, Fnge.

The duo hosted events of the good Sunday to NGE will be written in gold and kept in the historical record of the Guild as it has never happened, while to the host, Dr. Sule, who single-handedly bankrolled the reception, it was a worthy initiative.

Dr. Sule is truly a man of honour, integrity and thoughtful manner. We commend him for the kind gesture. May Allah reward him abundantly.

While speaking during the event, the university Don, said he decided to organise the reception to formally and informally express his gratitude to members for their cooperation during the convention which saw the emergence of the two members. He called on them to be good ambassadors of the Kano/Jigawa Forum.

In a speech earlier, the National President of the Guild, Mr. Isa described Kano as his second home, pointing out that Kano/Jigawa is a well-organized forum and will forever remain a reference point in the history of the Guild.

The president, who used the opportunity to thank members of the Local Organising Committee (LOC) for what he described as excellent job in making the convention a huge success, assured the Kano/Jigawa Forum that he would live up to his campaign promises. His words: “I assure you that by the grace of Allah, I will not let you down.

If anything, I shall consolidate on the foundation of my first tenure.” Similarly, Alhaji Abdulkadir Ahmed Ibrahim, who is a Fellow of the Guild and Veteran Journalist, in a speech, commended the new executive officers of the Guild and urged its new president to maintain his humility and sacrifice. He advised him to keep his campaign promises and obey the constitution and guidelines of the Guild in the discharge of his duties.

On his part, the former President of the Guild, Malam Dantiye, also contributed by advising the new president not to loose his friends because of his new office.

Dantiye, who is also a Fellow of the Guild, said responding to everyone who seeks his attention is the hall mark of a good leader. According to him, the new president should not despise anybody needing his help or attention.

He advised: “Don’t despise anyone who needs your attention because of your new position. Keep a good listening ear and carry everyone along.”

The former NGE President stated further that hard work and good performance make the future brighter for a leader, promising to offer assistance to the new executive officers of the Guild whenever the need arises. Also making his contribution, a former Deputy President of the Guild, Alhaji Suleiman Uba Gaya, praised the new president, Mr. Isa for what he called his integrity and simplicity.

He noted that Mr. Isa is a man of his words considering his assessment of him during his first tenure, pledging to continue to offer his help at all times.

The celebrants Kila and Ibrahim, who could not hide their emotions and feelings, commended the organizer, Dr. Sule and prayed for mercy journey back home for the President and other members of the Guild.

Other members who spoke during the reception included an elder, Malam Usman Usman, Dr. Halima Kamilu, Dr. Muktar Magaji, Hajiya Aisha Sule, Fnge, Muhammad Hussaini Kwalam and Sabo Guri among others.
