Women in Sokoto appeal for more empowerment skills

Speakers at the International Women’s Day celebration in Sokoto State have appealed for more empowerment programmes, to improve their economy and make them more resilient towards political issues.

This years 2021 International Women’s Day was held at Sokoto State Women Development Centre ,Ibrahim Dasuki Road with the theme “Women in leadership:Achieving an equal future in a COVID -19 World.”

The occasion was organised by the state Ministry for Women and Children Affairs with support from UNFPA .

In his goodwill message,the Sokoto Project support Officer ,Spotlight Initiative/UNFPA, Mr. Umar Idris said that his organisation is in the frontline support for gender equality activities in state.

According the Sportlight and UNFPA have been very supportive of all gender activities and reproductive health in the state.

Idris stated that the UNFPA in collaboration with the state government have various programme of activities to be carry throughout this year to support women in the areas of Bender Based Violence,(GBV) reproductive health and to educate them against harmful verses.

Idris who expressed satisfaction with the appointment of women in various public officers, urged the government to do more on gender equality but need to do mere as there need to see more women in places of public offices and leadership positions .

Contributing,the District Head of Gagi, Alhaji Umar Jabbi stressed the need for government to take concerted effort toward addressing the rate of maternal mortality and improve their economy based .

Alhaji Jabbi noted that in 300,000 women that gave birth annually about 125,000 were reported died do to various confiscation during birth in the state.

He urged all ties of government to double effort toward improving the health care delivery in the state.

In her remark,the Acting Permanent Secretary in the state Ministry for Women and Children’s Development ,Hajiya Kulu Nuhu said women in the state have experienced series of challenges during the Covid 19 pandemic and lockdown .

She expressed hoped that women all effort is now geared by all stakeholders to ensure rapid development if women folk in the state.

Highlight of the event includes displayed of various finished products such as pomade,leather bags ,soft drinks among others made by women to enhance their economy base .
