From Muawuya Bala Idris, Katsina
Kano State governor, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje has commended the foresight of the Federal Government in sighting a major railway project that will link Kano with other states and Maradi region, in Niger Republic.
He said the project, when completed, would enhance the socio-economic development of Kano, Katsina and Jigawa States.
Ganduje spoke in Katsina during the groundbreaking ceremony of the railway project line that would traverse through Kano-Katsina-Jibia-Maradi, with a branch to Dutse, the Jigawa State capital.
He said the project would not have been possible without determination of President Muhammadu Buhari to vigorously pursue his administration’s transformation agenda in the transport sector.
Ganduje said his state is “the greatest beneficiary” of the Buhari-led administration, especially in the area of road transportation.
He said the state, in addition to the ongoing federal road projects linking his state with those of Katsina and Kaduna, Kano is also enjoying rail projects linking it with Katsina and faraway Lagos State.
He said his state and by extension the Northwest region, would be the better for it by the time both the road and railway projects were completed.
In his speech, Katsina State governor, Alhaji Aminu Bello Masari said the story behind a railway line in the state has been an odd one, as there had been past attempts to make it possible, but effort did not see the light of the day.
Masari said people were still skeptical when issue of the current groundbreaking ceremony was to be held, adding that their doubts had been assuaged with the reality on ground.
He, however, called on the Federal Government to ensure timely completion of the project so that its socio-economic impact would begin to be felt by many within and outside the state.
The occasion was attended by the Emirs of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero; Katsina, Dr. Abdulmumini Kabir Usman as well as their counterpart of Dutse, Emir Nuhu Muhammad Sanusi and traditional rulers from Niger Republic.
Also at the occasion were Ministers of Information, Water Supply, Health and Management of the Nigeria Railway Corporation.
