As part of its effort to promote computer literacy and ICT awareness among students of secondary schools in Kano State, the Centre for Information Technology and Development (CITAD) has since 2003 instituted a yearly ICT quiz for secondary schools.
The technical officer of the centre, Engr. Kamilu Umar said the objective of the quiz is to sensitize the school communities to the need for computers, encourage students to take computer studies seriously and aid advocacy on the need for school proprietors and government to provide computers to schools.
He made this known during the presentation of last year’s cash prize to winners of ICT quiz at the boardroom of the State Senior Secondary School Management Board recently.
Engr. Umar added that during the last edition of the event, 26 secondary schools in the state participated where Government Technical College, Ungogo won the first position.
Maitama Sule Science College, Gaya came second and Government Technical College, Kano clinched the third position, while the secondary schools that won the first and second positions won N20,000 each, while the third position school had N10,000 cash prize.
He explained that the students that won first and second positions received N20, 000 each, while the third positions had N10, 000. In his remarks, the Director Schools of KSSSMB, Malam Idris Ahmad, who spoke on behalf of the Executive Secretary of the board, said the role of ICT could not be over-emphasized considering the fact that it changes the world and makes it a village.
He assured the centre of continued synergy between them as the state government is improving the use of ICT in its schools. He also thanked Prof. Shehu Alhaji Musa, the Vice Chancellor of Kano State University of Science and Technology, Wudil for taking responsibility of awarding the prize of first place position, and also giving N20,000 to each participating school from first to tenth positions and N50,000 for the best teacher.
